Why So Many Kids Struggle in Maths and What Actually Helps

The classroom is falling short. It’s costing our kids.

Australian classrooms are facing a maths crisis. National test results show that one in three students is behind where they should be in mathematics. For many parents, the signs show up gradually: a dip in confidence, rising frustration, and falling marks.

But the issue runs deeper than just the students.

The Real Problem Starts with the Foundations

New research by the Grattan Institute reveals the hidden cracks in our education system. The study found:

  • 82 percent of teachers say only half or fewer of their colleagues can confidently teach Year 6 maths
  • 85 percent say their peers do not understand how maths concepts build from Year 1 to Year 10
  • Nearly half of teachers have never received feedback on their maths teaching

This means students are missing the building blocks they need to succeed. Not because they lack ability, but because the structure supporting them is weak.

How This Affects Your Child

Without strong foundations, students fall into a cycle of confusion and catch-up. They struggle to apply concepts in new settings and quickly lose confidence.

Maths is cumulative. If a child does not grasp fractions in Year 4, algebra in Year 7 will feel impossible. The earlier gaps are addressed, the better.

What Actually Helps

One-on-one support at home can make all the difference. Unlike crowded classrooms, a tailored session gives your child space to ask questions, slow down when needed, and rebuild understanding at their own pace.

What works is consistency, care, and a tutor who knows how to explain things simply and clearly.
